HISTORY OF ELECTRIC BULB

The history of the electric bulb dates back to the early 19th century, with various inventors experimenting with different designs and technologies to create a practical and efficient lighting source.

In 1802, English scientist Sir Humphry Davy conducted pioneering research on the electrical properties of materials and demonstrated that an electric current could pass through a thin strip of metal, causing it to glow and produce light.

In the 1870s and 1880s, American inventor Thomas Edison and his team developed the incandescent bulb. Edison developed a bulb with a filament made of carbonized bamboo, which was capable of burning for over 1,200 hours.

In the early 20th century, other inventors developed alternative bulb designs such as the gas-discharge lamp (neon lamp) and the fluorescent lamp.

In the recent years, LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs have become increasingly popular due to their energy efficiency and long lifespan.

CFL

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are a type of electric bulb that uses a different technology than traditional incandescent bulbs to produce light.

A CFL bulb consists of a small tubular glass or plastic bulb that contains a small amount of mercury vapor and a phosphor coating on the inside. When an electric current is passed through the mercury vapor, it emits ultraviolet (UV) light, which in turn causes the phosphor coating to fluoresce, or give off visible light.

CFLs are more energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs. They use about 75% less energy and last about 8-15 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. They are also widely used in residential and commercial settings, as well as in street lighting.

CFLs have been widely adopted as a more energy-efficient alternative to incandescent bulbs, however, they have some drawbacks such as the small amount of mercury in them, which can be harmful if not properly disposed, and the time it takes for them to reach full brightness.

LED

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are a type of electric bulb that uses a semiconductor material to produce light.

An LED consists of a small chip made of a semiconductor material, such as gallium nitride (GaN), that is encased in a small package. When an electric current is passed through the semiconductor material, it emits light. The color of the light depends on the specific material used and the way it is processed.

LEDs are highly energy-efficient and have a long lifespan. They use about 85% less energy and last 25-30 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. They are also durable and can withstand rough handling and extreme temperatures. Additionally, they are available in a wide range of colors, brightness levels, and shapes, making them suitable for a variety of lighting applications, including residential, commercial and industrial settings.

LEDs have become the most popular technology for lighting due to their energy efficiency, long lifespan, and versatility. However, their high upfront cost is still a barrier for some consumers. Additionally, some concerns have been raised about their environmental impact and disposal, as some of the materials used in the manufacturing process can be toxic.
